Amyloid imaging and spinal fluid protein help diagnose Alzheimer’s disease

(PSYCHIATRIC TIMES) - Beta amyloid protein in cerebrospinal fluid may be a viable biomarker for Alzheimer's disease. The protein along with PET imaging may also help increase diagnostic specificity by distinguishing between various types of dementia, according to a study by a multidisciplinary team.

Previous research in AD mouse models has shown that greater amounts of amyloid-containing plaques in the brain are associated with lower levels of a specific protein fragment, beta… Continue

MRI-detected brain atrophy predicts dementia

Cognitively healthy elderly people who experience atrophy in the amygdala and hippocampus have a good chance of developing dementia, according to a study from the Netherlands in the January issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

Dr. Tom den Heijer and colleagues of the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam used MR imaging to assess the brain volumes of 511 dementia-free elderly subjects who were part of the Rotterdam Study, a large population-based cohort study that began in… Continue

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Substance Use Disorders in Adolescents

(PSYCHIATRIC TIMES) - The overlap between attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder and alcohol or drug abuse or dependence (referred to here as substance use disorders [SUDs]) in adolescents has been an area of increasing clinical, research and public health interest. Appearing in early childhood, ADHD affects from 6% to 9% of children and adolescents worldwide (Anderson et al., 1987) and up to 5% of adults (Kessler, in press). Longitudinal data suggest that childhood ADHD persists into… Continue

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Substance Abuse/ Dependence and Co-Occurring Social Anxiety Disorder

(PSYCHIATRIC TIMES) - Social anxiety is a very common disorder and is especially common among individuals with substance abuse or dependence (substance use disorders [SUDs]). Several epidemiologic surveys have estimated the prevalence of social anxiety disorder (also called social phobia) in the general population to be between 3% and 13% (Kessler et al., 1994; Schneier et al., 1992). However, in SUD clinics, the rate is significantly greater. Zimmermann and colleagues (2004) surveyed 150… Continue

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Patients Dually Diagnosed With Borderline Personality Disorder and Substance Use Disorders

(PSYCHIATRIC TIMES) - Originally developed and empirically supported as an outpatient treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) (Linehan, 1993a, 1993b; Linehan et al., 1991), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) recently has been adapted for adults with BPD and comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs) (Linehan et al., 2002, 1999). This modified treatment, DBT-SUD, has shown promise in two small randomized controlled trials and is currently being tested in a two-site study (University of… Continue

Neuroscience 2005: Encouragement for Alzheimer Diagnosis and Treatment

Traditionally, neurologists have diagnosed Alzheimer disease (AD) based on clinical signs and symptoms, with confirmation of the telltale amyloid-b (Ab) plaques and tau tangles only upon autopsy. Knowing that earlier intervention may be crucial to slowing or even halting disease progression, researchers have long sought a marker that could be teamed with imaging technologies to highlight initial changes.

At the time of diagnosis, researchers estimate, nearly a third of the neurons in… Continue

Treatment Compliance in Patients With Co-Occurring Mental Illness and Substance Abuse

(PSYCHIATRIC TIMES) - Compliance is a crucial determinant of the treatment outcome of any medical condition. Poor treatment compliance may affect the therapeutic alliance; create skepticism in both therapist and patient; create resistance; worsen the disease or the prognosis; and increase health care costs (Osterberg and Blaschke, 2005). Unfortunately, poor treatment compliance is often associated with blame, and noncompliant patients are sometimes punished with involuntary administrative… Continue

The Role of Substance Abuse in Intimate Partner Violence

(PSYCHIATRIC TIMES) - Much of the violence reported in the literature involves intimate partner violence (IPV) committed by men toward women, a pervasive problem in a significant proportion of U.S. families. Roughly 1,800 instances of homicide and manslaughter between intimate partners occurred in 1998, with more than 1,300 of these involving women as victims (Rennison and Welchans, 2000). The findings from the National Crime Victimization Survey indicate that nearly 1 million women are victims… Continue
